A TEMPORARY school which has been in a Huddersfield park for 18 months is to be removed this month.

The temporary building was put in Ravensknowle Park to house Moldgreen Community Primary School pupils while they waited for a new school to be built.

The new school - the first to be built in Kirklees for 30 years - was rebuilt on the site of the original Victorian school on The Avenue.

The old school had been condemned because of damp and wet rot.

Eighteen months ago, the 350 pupils moved into the temporary building off Lister Street and, six months later, work began on the new school.

The £5m school opened on June 10.

It features a window from the original school, alongside modern solar roof panels and a first-floor playdeck over an underground car park

It has 12 classrooms, one nursery unit, two autism units, two reception classes, a computer room, a library and a hall for the 350 children.

Now, the temporary building is to be dismantled and moved by hire company Waco International.

Kirklees Council will restore the part of Ravensknowle Park taken up by the school - off Lister Street - to its former condition.

A spokeswoman for the council's education department said: "The building will be dismantled and relocated by the hire company.

"This could be to anywhere in the country.

"The site will be reinstated to its condition before its development. The process should start this month."

The decision to put the temporary school in the park was controversial when Kirklees Council's Cabinet announced it in 2002.

Some people felt it would be cheaper to build a new school at Ravensknowle Park.

But other people living nearby argued that the park should not be used.
