The sunshine brought thousands of people to the ever-popular Mirfield Show yesterday .

The showground was packed for the 19th Mirfield Agricultural Show which had everything from horses and donkeys to rabbits and bumblebees.

Karen Bullivant, chairman of the show, said: “I am proud that the team have pulled together another entertaining family show.”

Among the winners was Jack Barrow and his amazing 98cm long rhubarb who took first prize in his fruit and veg class.

Fiona Farrar can be proud of her first place in the marrow class, along with William Crowther in the tomato class.

Youngster Eleanor Walls won first in the mini-seed garden, with sister Georgina coming second.

Jessica Asquith won first in the model made from containers for her giant frog.

And Mayoress of Kirklees Liz Bolt, wife of mayor Clr Martyn Bolt, had the tough task of judging the children’s fancy dress competition. She picked children dressed as Count Dracula, a waitress from Betty’s Tearoom and Dorothy and dog Toto as the winners.

Enjoying the day were Lee and Laura Lawson, of Fixby, who took their children Charlie, five, and Amelia, three.

Lee said: “It’s a brilliant day out. The events they put on keep the children busy all day and that’s priceless.”

Mirfield couple Jenna Smythson and Mike Thompson also attended with their young son Sam, six.

Jenna said: “It’s a brilliant atmosphere. Everyone is enjoying themselves and getting involved.”

She joked: “I’d like to volunteer to be the cake judge next year. It’s amazing looking at them but I want to eat them too.”

Events included a banana-eating competition, brass bands, a tug-of-war, donkey rides, archery, dry stone walling and Mirfield’s very own beach.
