MEMBERS of 10 Villages Conservation Group have been digging for newts’ victory.
The group, comprising volunteers who live in the Denby Dale Parish, has been preparing a pond in Denby Dale for newts to breed.
The members have been working to protect the area’s great crested newt population since the group’s inception in 2009.
The group has built 11 ponds along the Kirklees Light Railway between Clayton West and Shelley with funding from Sita.
It is currently building more ponds to help newt populations thrive after gaining cash from Kirklees Environment Unit.
Group co-founder Martin Longman said: “The newt project is creating a valuable wildlife corridor not only for the newts but for the rest of the wildlife in the area. This project is contributing directly to nature conservation within Denby Dale Parish.”
The 10 Villages Conservation Group is open to new members. For details call Andy Wickham on 01484 222960 or 07773 386550 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
