CHILDREN are putting the heat on politicians to tackle climate change.

Members of the newly formed HEAT (Huddersfield Eco Action Team) have urged Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman and Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney to back an amendment to the Energy Bill, which will set a CO2 reduction target for 2030.

The group, which so far comprises eight families, also created paper windmills to signify renewable energy at its inaugural meetings at The Quakers’ Meeting House, Paddock, on Sunday.

HEAT founder and Meltham mother, Chayley Collis, said: “In 2030 our children will be beginning their adult lives.

“MPs owe it to them to make good policy decisions now to encourage green jobs, energy security and to prevent climate chaos.

“We will be watching to see if local MPs will support the decarbonisation amendment to the Energy Bill.”

Ms Collis added: “It’s hard for families to get involved with this sort of thing and we wanted to do something that’s family friendly and would get children involved with environmental issues.”

Energy Bill amendment, as recommended by the Government commissioned Committee on Climate Change, will cut power sector carbon intensity to 50gCO2/kWh by 2030. The amendment, however, is not supported by a large section of the Government.
