FORTY-five volunteers did their bit to make Brighouse beautiful.

Local businesses and residents have been working hard over the last year to make the most of one of Brighouse’ key features, the Calder and Hebble Navigation, which runs through the town centre.

They’ve been clearing rubbish and overgrown brambles from the canal area.

Last Sunday 45 volunteers did their bit to tidy up the town.

“We aim to have a Clean Up in Brighouse twice a year,” said Lidia Shinwell, Director at Prego Italian Café Bar and Restaurant and organiser of the Canal Clear Up events.

“This is the third event and has once again been extremely successful. It goes to show there is community spirit around and people thoroughly enjoyed the morning.”

The main objectives are to clean debris and overgrowth in around the water from canoes, on Saville, the Calder Navigation Societies beautiful barge, and by foot from the towpaths.

They were supported by British Waterways, Pennine Canoe Club and the Calder Navigation Society. The Waterfront Lodge Hotel, Sainsbury’s and Prego also provided much-needed supplies.

The children who took part were presented with a certificate of achievement which count towards Challenge Badges at Guides and Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

By the end of the day a skip full of overgrowth was filled to the brim and another skip was half filled with debris.

“The next is planned for Spring 2013,” says Lidia. “We are very grateful for the effort the volunteers put in. I know they enjoy it and all agree that it gives a great sense of satisfactionŠ and achievement.”
