A GRANT to help small businesses make their companies more environmentally friendly is available from Kirklees Council.

The council is offering a Business Environment Grant of up to £5,000 – or 50% match funding – for environmental improvements to small and medium-sized businesses.

The award can be used for purchasing new waste or energy-saving equipment, or more efficient machinery.

The Kirklees Business Environment Grant follows the success of the 2011/12 scheme, run with CO2Sense, which allocated £258,845 to 42 Kirklees businesses.

The scheme generated £414,195 of private sector investment in the local economy and achieved £206,942 of savings per annum, Kirklees Council said.

Kirklees Council Leader Mehboob Khan said: “These grants will enable local businesses to save energy and become more efficient and therefore save money.

“Please don’t delay in applying as funding is limited and will be on a first come, first served basis.”

Milnsbridge joiners and metalworkers Manzana Contracts spent its £8,000 grant on waste wood heaters reducing their energy bills and reducing their carbon footprint by 160 tonnes a year.

Businesses interested in applying for this year’s grant should contact Jim Porter at jim.porter@kirklees.gov.uk or on 01484 221660.
