A HEALTH food co-operative is supporting local schools to go greener.

Elland company Suma is sponsoring Old Earth Primary School in the town and Brighouse High School.

Suma is the UK’s largest independent wholefood wholesaler and distributor specialising in vegetarian, fairly traded, organic, ethical and natural products.

The co-op, based at Lowfields Business Park, is sponsoring an eco classroom at Old Earth.

The building will benefit from low carbon consumption technology and sustainable energy features such as solar panels, ground source heat pumps and rainwater filtering systems.

Old Earth headteacher Paul Reynolds said: “The children and staff from Suma are planning a programme of events and opportunities with the aim to share eco ideas.”

The co-op is also encouraging pupils at Brighouse High School to get their hands dirty and learn about growing their own food.

Suma provided the funding for a 10x20ft polytunnel, including paying for the preparation of the ground and trenching, construction work and 200-litre butts.

Headteacher Liz Cresswell said: “It has been fantastic to establish a partnership with Suma.”
