A CAMPAIGN funded by Marks & Spencer to reconnect communities with the environment is underway in Kirklees.

M&S and charity Groundwork have launched the @myurbangreen project to give community groups extra support to nurture their local green spaces.

The campaign also aims to empower people to take active roles in shaping the development, maintenance and management of the land.

A regional network of Groundwork green space experts, funded by M&S, is leading the campaign. Their mission is to give tips and ideas to community groups on how to identify and respond to local needs, recruit volunteers and design and deliver activities and events that raise the profile of their work.

To kick-start the project in Kirklees, Groundwork teamed up with Lyn Royd Sheltered Housing Complex in Linthwaite to improve its community garden with the help of residents and members of the local community.

@myurbangreen is a nationwide campaign and by September 2012 it aims to deliver at least 850 community green space activities and events across the country.
