A FATHER-of-one who was found guilty of indecently assaulting two young girls has been jailed by a judge for two years.
Gerard Martin, formerly of Kirkheaton, Huddersfield, was convicted by a jury at Bradford Crown Court in March and was jailed yesterday.
Judge Roger Scott told the 33-year-old that he would have to register with the police as a sex offender for 10 years after his release.
He also banned Martin from ever working with children and imposed a four-year extended supervision period on top of the two-year term, which means he would be at risk of being returned to jail for the next six years.
Martin was found guilty of two offences of indecent assault against girls aged between 11 and 13, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.
Judge Scott accepted that letters and testimonials put forward on Martin's behalf spoke highly of him and that he had been a devoted father to his own daughter.
"People speak highly of you in the past and can't believe you have done that which the jury says you have done," he added.
"But I'm afraid I have to deal with you on the basis of what you have actually been convicted of and I have to look at the future to protect the public."
Barrister Suzanne Goddard, for Martin, said his daughter, for whom he was the sole carer, was now living with his sister and that meant any prison sentence would be "doubly devastating" for him.
