A MOTHER-OF-FOUR facing jail has been allowed home to sort out her affairs after a jury found her guilty of unlawfully killing her partner.
Brighouse woman Julie Harris, 34, was cleared of murdering Graham Carter, 46, after a two-week trial at Bradford Crown Court.
But the jury unanimously convicted her on the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Harris had been in a relationship with Mr Carter for 16 years. She stabbed him in the back during a violent row at their home in Smith House Close last December.
After two days in hospital he returned home, but shortly after Christmas he was re-admitted and suffered a fatal heart attack caused by an infection in the knife wound.
Harris, who had no previous convictions, told the court that Mr Carter had been a heavy drinker over many years and had subjected her to what she described as "mental torture".
On the day of the stabbing he had been out drinking and Harris said he attacked her.
She said Mr Carter was dragging her about by the throat and she thought he was going to kill her.
Harris admitted stabbing Mr Carter twice, but said the first mark was just a pin-prick and the second was not a lot more.
Mr Justice Smith said it was almost inevitable that Harris would be sent to jail in about two weeks.
Mr Carter's sister, Julie Carr, said: "I'm happy with what has been done. Justice has been done and he can now rest in peace."
She said she had mixed feelings towards Harris, adding: "I feel sorry for the kids, because it will be them that suffer at the end of the day."
