A fire has gutted the home of renowned eccentric Jake Mangel Wurzel.

Nothing is left of the caravan that Jake had been living in on his Peat Ponds land off Lindley Moor Road after it was engulfed by flames last night.

It is the second big blow to the Huddersfield character in recent years, whose adjoining house was reduced to a shell in 2010 following another blaze.

Two fire crews from Huddersfield and Rastrick were called to the scene at 11.15pm last night by one of Jake’s neighbours and found the caravan ablaze.

It measures 15 metres by five metres and has a wooden extension to the side.

They tackled the flames for an hour and a half to fully extinguish the fire but could not save it.

Fire at the home of Jake Mangel Wurzel, Peat Ponds, Lindley Moor. The extension to Jake's cottage which contained a 30 foot mobile home which was destroyed in the fire.

Peter Bostock, Rastrick watch commander, said that the fire had been caused by a log burner that Jake had been using.

“It’s been totally destroyed”, he said.

“He had been using a log burning stove, which caught fire and spread to the surrounding furnishings.

“He escaped unharmed.

“It’s very unfortunate for him considering what happened to his house.”
