ECCENTRIC Jake Mangel Wurzel has sold one of his prize creations to a new owner - for just £1.03!

Jake, of Lindley Moor, has given a "folly" monument he built outside the JobCentre Plus in High Street, Huddersfield, to fellow joker Mike Madden, 50, of Honley.

Jake started building the structure in November 2002 and finished it in February this year.

And on Saturday he wrapped the monument in Christmas paper and put a Christmas tree on top of it for the handover ceremony.

He and Mr Madden also set up chairs and tables, so that passers-by could enjoy mince pies and drinks.

Jake also bestowed one of his ``Wurzel knighthoods" on Mr Madden at the event.

Mr Madden paid Jake £1.03 for the monument - because 103 is Jake's lucky number.

Jake said: "Although he's paying me, it's sort of a Christmas present.

"Usually I ignore Christmas, but Mick said he wanted it when I died - and I thought why wait so long?

"Although lawfully it won't be mine anymore, I shall consider that it will always be mine in a way," he added.

The presentation is the latest in a long saga of events relating to the folly.

When Jake first built it in February, it was much higher. But Kirklees Council demolished it because it was put up without planning permission.

Jake, 66, replaced it with a 9ft one and guarded it round the clock until, in May, Kirklees said it could stay.

Jake had to agree to maintain the site for the rest of his life, but now this responsibility falls on Mr Madden.
