A man smashed his neighbour’s window after he grabbed his teenage son by the throat, a court heard.

James Shaw, of Hopkinson Road in Brackenhall, pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that the incident occurred near to Shaw’s home on October 25.

Prosecutor Clint Chambers said that Shaw’s neighbour had earlier had an argument with his 17-year-old son in Asda car park.

The neighbour had gone home but 20 minutes later found Shaw on his doorstep with his son.

Shaw then used a hammer to smash the glass in his neighbour’s door.

The 41-year-old, who was not represented, claimed that the neighbour had been causing problems for his family.

Shaw told the court: “He’s grabbed my son by the throat at Asda car park and I went to confront him.

“He wouldn’t come out , my son came to the door with a hammer and I took it off him.”

District Judge Michael Fanning ordered Shaw to pay £50 for the damage caused as well as £85 fine, £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge.
