Lanterns will fill the night sky in tribute to the Huddersfield victim of a horrifying car crash.

Up to 100 people are expected to head to Castle Hill on Friday June 20 at 9.30pm to pay their respects to 21-year-old dad of one, Jamie Baines, who was killed when the stolen BMW car he was driving careered 40 feet down a tree-lined embankment.

The crash happened on the Calderdale Way in Elland.

Another 24-year-old man was left critically injured and two more suffered multiple fractures in the accident, which occurred at 1.15am on June 13.

Jamie, who was locally named as the victim by social media users, lived in Primrose Hill area of Newsome and was described as a ‘good and kind person’.

Dozens of lanterns will be set off in his memory at the popular attraction to show how well-liked he was and counteract several critical comments about his actions that appeared on Facebook.

One of the organisers said: “We just wanted to do something to remember Jamie and pay our respects.

“We’re not saying what he did was right but he was a good and kind person and at the end of the day he has lost his life, which is terrible and incredibly sad.

“He was a great friend and really good to his relatives and we just hope that it will help his family at this time.”

Other friends took to Facebook to pay their respects.

Tasha Murphy said: “No one in this world is perfect. Jamie had the most decent and kind heart anyone could want.”

The three other passengers are still receiving treatment at Leeds General Infirmary for their injuries, but none are now thought to be life threatening. The 24-year-old man was described as “stable”.

Police confirmed that they were not involved in a pursuit of the car at the time of the incident but have launched an appeal for witnesses to the collision.

It was one of three fatal crashes to take place in West Yorkshire in the space of 24 hours and led to the closure of the road for almost nine hours.

Three fire crews were sent to the scene and had to cut one person free from the vehicle.
