A DOG found abandoned and starving has flourished into a prize-winning pooch.

Jasmine, a collie-cross, was covered in fleas, had matted hair and was desperately underweight when she was picked up by dog wardens just before Christmas.

But hours of tender loving care and a diet of baby rice and tuna have transformed her into a canine to be proud of.

"She's the sweetest, nicest dog ever and the whole family adores her," said her new owner, Caroline Dyson, of Fartown.

Two-year-old Jasmine has now piled on the pounds and will be competing against 18 other magnificent mutts in the RSPCA's Dog of the Year final in Surrey tomorrow.

Jasmine won the Huddersfield and district heat of the competition for rescued dogs at Greenhead Park in June.

Caroline, husband Jez and children Joe, 15, and Emily, 13, chose Jasmine from Marina Kennels in Huddersfield.
