A GOLCAR-born artist has been chosen to create the first work of art in the River Colne Sculpture Trail.

Jayne Lloyd, who is based in London, has been commissioned to create a sculpture for the trail later this autumn.

It will be the first in a series of 10 sculptures that will be placed along the banks of the River Colne, between Milnsbridge and Marsden.

The sculptures will reflect the environment and history of the Colne Valley.

Artist Cate Clark was chairwoman of the panel which selected Jayne Lloyd.

She said: "Jayne Lloyd is a young artist at an early stage of her career and already has an impressive track record.

"Her work has been shown nationally and internationally and she emerged as a clear choice during the selection process. We are very excited to have her on board."

Jayne has previously produced work inspired by domestic spaces and public spaces and how people relate to them.

Her sculpture for the trail will focus on the mills that dominate the Colne Valley landscape.

She said: "I will investigate how mills are now increasingly being turned into apartments. I am fascinated by how the role of these buildings has changed and by the history that they carry."

Her sculpture will be placed in the centre of Slaithwaite, near the Moonraker Floating Tearoom.

However, before Jayne comes up with a final design she will work with different community groups to gather information and views about her subject.
