They are already making a big noise in the world of jazz.

And now Jackanory Jazz has added a special award to its repertoire.

The group is a seven-piece band put together by pupils in year eight at Honley High School. They write all their own music and organise their own rehearsals and performances.

And when they performed at the Marsden Jazz Festival last weekend, they were joined by members of the Honley High School band – and by a world famous trombonist.

Dennis Rollins, who has recorded, performed, and toured with a host of musicians and bands, including Courtney Pine, joined the school’s performers on the Bandstand in the Park.

The school’s head of music Leigh Baker said: “Dennis was dueting with the kids, and it was a wonderful experience for them.

“We were in the Bandstand which is a lovely environment and it was a great day.”

Jackanory Jazz has recently won a prestigious award, which band members collected at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The partnership award in the Music for Youth event means the youngsters will receive a coaching and mentoring session with Birmingham Town Hall and Symphony Hall’s resident jazz ensemble, the Jazzlines Trio, and will give a special foyer performance in the Symphony Hall’s Café Bar.

Mr Baker said: “They’re very self-motivated and run their own ship. The award means they will be able to do a workshop with the jazz band in residence at Birmingham.”
