MP Jo Cox has died after being attacked in Birstall today.

The Batley and Spen MP was shot and stabbed by a man in Market Street at 12.53pm today.

She was taken to Leeds General Infirmary but has tragically passed away from her injuries.

West Yorkshire Police has launched a murder investigation into the senseless attack.

At a press conference, temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins said: "I am very sad to report she has died. I would like to express our deepest sympathies to her family and friends at this time.

"This is a very significant investigation. A full investigation is underway to establish the motive of this attack."

Officers were providing local support, she added. Nobody else was being sought.

Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson said: "I am deeply shocked that such a talented young woman has been attacked while serving her community.

"We need to channel all our thoughts into supporting the families and community at this time."

A 52 year old man named locally as Tommy Mair, was arrested. Weapons including a firearm were recovered.

Ms Cox, a mum of two, was elected in May last year.

She held the Batley and Spen seat which had been vacated by Mike Wood, increasing the majority by 2,000.On her Twitter page she describes herself as “mum, proud Yorkshire lass, boat dweller, mountain climber and former aid worker."

She had been campaigning to remain in the EU before next week's referendum vote.
