It's a poignant photo which has stirred many memories.

A group of young students laugh and smile for the camera on the steps of No 10 Downing Street.

And one of them is Jo Cox, the lass from Yorkshire who grew up to be a brilliant politician but was cruelly murdered less than a week ago.

The tragic death of Mrs Cox not only stunned her husband, children and family, but also those who knew her - inclduing former Heckmondwike Grammar School teacher John Lockwood.

Mr Lockwood, now 80, of Almondbury, was at the school for 37 years and became head of geography.

He remembers teaching Jo’s parents Gordon and Jean as well as the teenage Jo herself.

And he has a treasured picture of her with fellow students in Downing Street.

Many had tipped Mrs Cox to be a Cabinet star of the future, meaning many visits to Downing Street.

Jo Cox is pictured left on the steps of 10 Downing Street on a school trip with fellow Heckmondwike Grammar School pupils. Kirklees Council Conservative David Hall is second from right. The picture was taken by retired teacher John Lockwood, who was a teacher at the school at the time.

Mr Lockwood said: “I used to organise trips to London and I remember taking a group of 10 to Westminster. There were nine girls and just one boy in the group. I cannot remember the exact date but it was in the early 1980s.

“We attended a service at Westminster Abbey for a Commonwealth Society event and we then toured Downing Street.

“The photo was taken right outside the famous door and Jo is there with her friends.

“One of the other students is David Hall, who is now a Conservative councillor for Liversedge and Gomersal on Kirklees Council.

“A friend and I met up with Jo only a few months ago and we gave her a copy of the photo.”
