A NEW professor has been appointed at Huddersfield University.

Adrian Wood has an international reputation for his work promoting sustainability in Africa.

He is in charge of the Wetlands and Natural Resources Research Group in the university's Environmental and Geographical Sciences Department.

He said: "I'm interested in understanding how African farmers manage their resources, and can do that sustainably."

Prof Wood studied at Durham and Liverpool universities.

His doctorate involved working in Africa and he now spends up to four months each year in countries such as Ethiopia and Rwanda.

He joined Huddersfield University in 1987 from the University of Zambia, where he had been a lecturer in geography.

Prof Wood is married with two children and lives in Kirk- heaton.
