A Huddersfield man and a woman in their 60s have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of seven-year-old Joe McCafferty in a house fire 18 years ago.

Police this morning confirmed officers have arrested a 65-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman on suspicion of murder, and they are currently in custody.

The arrests come two days after Joe’s family marked the 18th anniversary of his death with an emotional video appeal to help trace his killers.

The fire broke out at Joe’s aunt’s house in Haywood Avenue, Marsh, Huddersfield, on May 3, 1997.

Joe was badly injured and later died in hospital. His aunt, two cousins and older brother survived the terrifying ordeal.

His mum Tracey said in the appeal: “It would mean the world. Just to put it to bed, to put it to rest.”

Anyone with information about the circumstances leading up to Joe’s death or the person responsible is urged to call West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team on 101 or pass information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
