A HUDDERSFIELD man has gone on trial accused of sexually abusing a girl more than a decade ago.

John Darby, 42, of Woodhead Road, Huddersfield, has denied a series of allegations of indecent assault and indecency with a child relating to a complainant who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

A jury at Bradford Crown Court yesterday began hearing evidence in the trial which could last into next week.

Prosecutor Robin Mairs said the allegations were reported to the police in 2010 and when Darby was questioned he denied abusing the complainant.

Darby said the claims were part of a “vindictive campaign’’ against him.

Mr Mairs said Darby categorically denied the offences and said they were lies.

He said the jury had to put aside emotion or feelings of disgust in respect of such allegations and consider the evidence dispassionately and coolly.

The trial continues.
