A HUDDERSFIELD butcher has been accepted to Britain's oldest and most famous meat guild.

John Mallinson, co-owner of Atkinsons butcher's shop, on Sheffield Road, New Mill, has become an elected member of The Worshipful Company of Butchers.

The guild, based at The Butchers' Hall, Smithfield, London, dates back to the 10th Century and is today a focal point for the meat industry.

As a member since January, John, 56, is entitled to dine at the hall as well as use its first class library and facilities.

John, who runs Atkinsons with his brother Paul, can add MIM - which stands for Member of the Institute of Meat - after his name.

Father-of-three John, who has been a butcher for more than 40 years, said: "The guild has always been in the back of my mind.

"It's an ancient order and that really appeals to me.

"I'm allowed to put letters after my name, but I won't bother. I'm not that type of person.

"Becoming a member is certainly not something that anyone could do. You have to be well qualified and probably quite old!

"I'm really chuffed to have been accepted. I've put my certificate in a posh frame that will go up in the shop."
