A STOCKSMOOR man will be tackling his 11th London Marathon next month.
John Philpott, 50, of Cross Lane, will be running as a veteran 50 competitor in the gruelling 26 mile race on April 18.
He has competed in the race 10 times between 1981 and 1995.
John, an independent financial advisor, wants to raise £1,000, which will be split between Yorkshire Cancer Research and Thurstonland First School.
Yorkshire Cancer Research - which will get 75% of the cash - is a cause close to his heart. His wife Joanne, a practice nurse, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 1998.
She has recently been given the all-clear, to the relief of John and their children Lauren, 20, Sophie, 14, Benji, 12 and Henry, nine.
Parents and teachers at Thurstonland First School are sponsoring John, as are his fellow members of Holmfirth Round Table.
John, who has run with Holmfirth Harriers since 1980, will be classed as an `elite' athlete if he completes the marathon in under three hours 15 minutes.
However, he wants to finish in under three hours - and perhaps even equal his personal best of two hours 48 minutes, achieved at the 1984 marathon.
John is running more than 50 miles a week, accompanied by his dog Nell.
