HUDDERSFIELD-born athlete Jonny Barrow competes in this Sunday's New York Marathon.

Jonny, 29, was brought up in Marsh and went to Salendine Nook High School and Huddersfield Technical College.

He will be running in aid of Cancer Research and aims to raise about £3,000.

Jonny said: "I've had so many friends and family members affected by cancer that I am keen that more research is done and to raise awareness about a condition which affects one in three people."

Jonny has been training for about nine months and aims to complete the run in three and a half hours.

He says the marathon is a precursor to another fundraiser, a 100-mile trek through the Himalayas in five days next October.

Jonny gained a BSc degree in physiology from Trinity and All Saints College, Leeds, and now works as a computer analyst for The Halifax in Leeds.

He socialises regularly in the Huddersfield area.
