A man burgled his uncle’s home and took his £75,000 car when he knew the family was away on holiday in America.

Leeds Crown Court heard Jordan Michael Lowther, of Dewsbury, had previously been employed by Philip Guck and had a grudge against him after he had been sacked.

Mr Guck had left his home in Bracken Close, Mirfield locked and secure leaving a key with a neighbour but on the morning of May 3 the break-in was discovered.

A pane of glass had been removed from a porch door and as well as electrical items, a watch and money the Audi A8 car was missing from the garage.

James Weekes prosecuting said the previous day Lowther was seen approaching the house but because he was a relative no one was suspicious of his actions.

However after Mr Guck returned home he told the police about his nephew. The car was subsequently found undamaged parked in Dewsbury while a purse and watch among the stolen property were both recovered from Lowther when he was arrested.

Lowther said he was spending £100 to £200 a week on cannabis, cocaine and Mcat and had debts due to gambling. Glenn Parsons representing Lowther said he had felt he had been treated unfairly by his uncle and intended to cause him some “disquiet” thinking he had lost the car but had always intended he get it back.

Lowther, 23 of West Park Street, Dewsbury admitted burglary and theft, driving without a licence and without insurance. He was given a two year jail sentence suspended for two years with 180 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £500 compensation.
