A young man who went out drinking in Wakefield died hours later after borrowing his younger brother’s car, going out again and hitting a sign post.

Jordan Preene, 22, of Bedford Avenue, Grange Moor, suffered serious head injuries following the collision and died shortly afterwards in hospital last year, an inquest heard yesterday.

The Huddersfield hearing was told that tests conducted after his death showed the personal trainer was more than twice over the legal drink/drive limit.

West Yorkshire Assistant Deputy Coroner Mary Burke said Mr Preene died after losing control of the Renault Clio on the A629 Wakefield Road not far from Shorehead roundabout.

He had been driving with an old friend Marcus Darkwa who escaped with only minor injuries.

After hearing all the evidence Ms Burke said Jordan had gone out with friends on October 12. He had been dropped off in Wakefield and visited a number of bars in the Wakefield area.

At round 2am he and one of his friends had returned to Huddersfield and borrowed Luke Preene’s Clio.

Ms Burke added that they had driven into the town but were running out of money fast.

Some more alcohol had been consumed but around 4.25am the duo had called it a night and he had begun driving along the A629 in the direction of Aspley.

Ms Burke said: “It appears that Jordan has come into contact with the kerb on the central reservation and as a result it has mounted the central reservation and come into contact with the road sign which has caused extensive damage to the vehicle which has rotated and turned over.”

Stephen Shaw, a firefighter on his way back from an incident in Dalton, saw the aftermath of the collision. Ms Burke read his statement to the court in which he described how he released Mr Preene from his seat belt, laid him on the floor and began trying to resuscitate him.

Paramedics soon arrived and he was connected to their equipment before being taken by ambulance to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Sadly, Mr Preene’s injuries were so severe that his life was pronounced extinct at 5.03am on October 13.

Ms Burke said as well as the alcohol consumed “tiredness may well have been a factor. This incident happened in a matter of seconds.”

Her conclusion was that he died as result of a road traffic collision.
