A man assaulted his best friend after discovering that he had been sleeping with his girlfriend.

Benjamin Hewitt woke up in an ambulance after being floored by single punch thrown by Joshua Brown.

Brown, 22, pleaded guilty to assault by beating when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that the incident happened in Cross Church Street in Huddersfield on March 28.

Brown and Mr Hewitt had been out drinking in the town earlier with some friends.

After the pair were separated the 22-year-old found out that Mr Hewitt had been having a fling with his girlfriend when they split up for a period before getting back together.

He punched Mr Hewitt in the cheek when he came across him later, causing him to fall backwards onto the ground.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said: “Mr Hewitt didn’t remember much of what happened after then.

“He came round in an ambulance with a three by three inch gash to the back of his head which needed glueing and stapling.”

Brown, of Butts Terrace, Farnley Tyas, sought medical assistance for Mr Hewitt but police arrested him.

He told police that he was angry about Mr Hewitt sleeping with his girlfriend.

Sonia Kidd, mitigating, said: “He was upset as you might be if your best friend slept with your girlfriend.”

She added that her client had been drinking and wouldn’t have acted how he did if he had not been.

Magistrates gave Brown a conditional discharge for six months.

He must still pay £85 costs and £15 victim surcharge.
