An ex-serviceman and a charity director will be among those representing Huddersfield in Britain’s most famous road race.

David Foster, a former RAF engineer, and Julie Townsend, the deputy chief executive of Huddersfield-based road safety charity Brake, will be running the London Marathon, on April 26.

They will be taking part in the 26-mile race to raise money for the RAF Association (RAFA) and Brake respectively.

David, 45 from Newsome, has so far raised some of his £1,700 target through collections in supermarkets.

The dad-of-three, who now works as a surveyor engineer, said: “It was only natural that when I looked for a charity to support it should be something that means something to me.

“I’m really looking forward to my first full marathon, but I’m also a bit apprehensive at the moment. I injured my knee before Christmas, but thankfully I’m almost back to full strength again and training hard.”

It is also Julie’s first marathon.

Julie, 34, of Leeds, said: “Brake is a brilliant charity, which is why I’ve dedicated 10 years of my life to it.”

Lisa Kendall, Brake’s community fundraising officer, added: “It’s wonderful to have Julie support Brake in this way and all our staff have been behind her, helping with her fundraising, and joining her on the Huddersfield 10k in preparation.

“Every penny raised by Julie will be put towards our work supporting families whose lives have been devastated by a road crash, and campaigning for safer roads.”
