PREGNANT women have been going to what is thought to be the first antenatal clinic in a supermarket.

Sainsbury's in Westwood, near Margate, Kent, has opened facilities for mums- to-be.

The clinic is the idea of Sue Eve, of the midwifery section of East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust. She said: "We wanted to give women more choice about where they had antenatal care and to bring health into the community, where it belongs."

The facilities are open 8am until 10pm. Women can expect the same check-up as that offered by GP surgeries.

Ms Eve hopes to broaden the services to include health promotion classes on breastfeeding and giving up smoking.
