AN innovative funding scheme to help cash strapped Huddersfield undergraduates closes this week.

Huddersfield University’s vice-chancellor Prof Bob Cryan launched a scholarship fund for students who may struggle to afford university when fees rise to £8,000 in 2012.

His scheme, using a number of tax breaks and funding sources, creates £10 from every £1 donation.

Prof Cryan is personally matching every £1 donation while former Galpharm Pharmaceuticals and Huddersfield Town chairman Graham Leslie has pledged to double the entire pot of cash.

More than 600 people including staff, students and even the cleaner, have already donated to the scheme.

The scheme closes on July 30.
