TEENAGER Katie Moore is preparing for an epic expedition.

The 19-year-old student from Netherton is raising cash for Save the Children by scaling the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.

The former Honley High pupil, now studying at Durham University, said: "I am not a fitness fanatic, but I have always enjoyed a challenge and this will certainly be that.

"I heard about the trip and immediately wanted to do it for Save the Children because of the massive job they have done and will continue doing to help people devastated by the tsunami disaster.

"I am already in training for the climb. Temperatures at the summit can be as cold as 26 degrees below freezing so I have to prepare for that.

"Another problem is altitude sickness but I have started doing exercises that will hopefully help me to cope with that."

Katie will be part of a 25-strong team of fellow Durham students who will attempt to climb the 5,895 metres to the top.

"I have to raise £2,200 for the trip," said Katie.

"In total £1,200 of that goes directly to the charity and the rest covers my travel costs and tax that has to be paid to preserve the mountain.

"If any companies would like to sponsor me they should get in touch and do their bit for Save the Children."

Katie has organised a music night at Upperthong Village Hall on April 17.

Prices on the door are £7 for adults and £5 for children and golden oldies band the Travelling Billberets will be entertaining the crowds.
