A FREE training session educating people about how to best protect children on the roads is being offered to family workers in Kirklees.

The Stay Safe Family Promise road safety training course by Brake, the national road safety charity, is being set up as part of their initiative to save more children’s lives on the roads.

Community leaders, children’s centre staff, childminders and volunteers working with families in Kirklees and the North East are being urged to take advantage of the free, half-day training course, which will give them the skills they need to deliver road safety presentations within their local community.

A child is killed or seriously injured every 18 minutes on UK roads, and fifteen children are killed or seriously injured every month whilst walking or cycling in the North East.

Brake has set up the course in conjunction with NCH children’s charity, and it will be available through the FedEx & Brake Road Safety Academy, an educational programme co-ordinated by Brake and funded by express delivery company FedEx.

Sarah Fatica, General Manager at Brake, said: “It is essential we educate parents about dangers their children face on roads and advise them how to best protect them. By educating parents face-to-face through the FedEx & Brake Road Safety Academy we show that taking simple road safety steps really does save lives.”

The training covers topics including correctly restraining children in vehicles, safe driving, and keeping children safe while walking and cycling.

The course will be held at Newcastle’s MEA House on April 3 at 12.00pm.
