A man pretended to be hiding under a duvet when police came knocking at his door as neighbours heard a woman screaming.

Kevin Wilson, 32, appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court accused of breaching his bail conditions by allowing Alison Wilkinson, 31, in his home at Fare Hill Flats, Berry Brow. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The court heard that the defendant, who has a serious alcohol problem, was due to appear in the court on November 14 for a trial involving a charge of common assault to which he has pleaded not guilty.

One of the four bail conditions was for him to have neither direct or indirect contact with Miss Wilkinson.

The Crown’s case is that on September 12 at 12.45am officers were called to the defendant’s home and found the couple in bed together.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said: “Mr Wilson is on bail for an assault on Miss Wilkinson. She is also on bail awaiting sentence for an assault on Mr Wilkinson.”

Two police officers were patrolling in the area when they were asked to attend the defendant’s home following reports of a woman screaming.

Mr Bozman said: “They spoke to neighbours who said they had heard raised voices since 7pm.

“Miss Wilkinson said she would get dressed and open the door. Mr Wilkinson was hiding under a duvet in the bedroom”.

Appearing for the defendant, Catherine McCullagh, said he had not locked the internal door to his flat.

Alison Wilkinson had attended at his address in drink. He asked her to leave repeatedly.

“He went to bed and he says he thought she had left. He disputes that he was hiding under the duvet. I would ask you to agree that the breach is unproved. He didn’t want her there. He went to bed and thought she had left.”

Wilson was found guilty of a breach of bail and was rebailed with new conditions.
