YOUNGSTERS made a splash in tribute to the three Huddersfield soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan.

About 100 children took part in a sponsored swim at Salendine Nook High School’s pool at the weekend.

They swam as many lengths as they could in a set time to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity.

The swim was organised in memory of Pte Daniel Wilford, 21, of Cowlersley, Cpl Jake Hartley, 20, of New Mill, and Pte Anton Frampton, 20, of Longwood.

The soldiers were killed in a roadside bomb last month.

Members of Huddersfield Crusaders Swimming Club and Salendine Nook Swimming Stroke Technique classes took park in the fundraiser.

They were spurred on by Golcar Brass band, who played pieces for an hour including the poignant Last Post.

It was organised by Anita Murgatroyd, of Birchencliffe, who runs the swimming classes.

She said: “I got the idea when I was walking through town and saw the flowers on the war memorial.

“Both of my sons are 18 and 19 and I couldn’t imagine what a loss like that would be like.

“It really got to me and I sent emails around about doing the swim and had a fantastic response.

“I chose Help for Heroes because I asked the soldiers’ parents through the Examiner what charity they wanted the money to go to.”

The fundraiser has so far made £1,600 to help the charity, which supports those who have been wounded in Britain’s current conflicts.
