A man cost the taxpayer £1,000 when armed police attended at his Dalton home after he made a hoax report of a woman being held hostage.

Eight firearms officers, five police officers, a dog handler and a dog descended upon the address in Harwood Close on May 25.

Kieron Ingham, who made the call, pleaded guilty to wasting police time when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court today.

Rory Byrne, prosecuting, said that at the time of the incident Ingham had been bailed by police for a domestic incident involving his partner.

The 20-year-old returned to the address, which belongs to his father, and found his partner there.

Mr Byrne said: “Because of that he reacted by calling police telling them that his father had a gun and a knife and that his partner was being held hostage.”

“Police including eight firearms officers attended at the costs of £1,000 to the taxpayer because there was no gun and no knife.”

The court heard that Ingham had previously suffered a serious brain injury following an accident.

This caused various issues including an inability to think through his actions.

District Judge Michael Fanning ordered a psychiatric report ahead of his sentencing on July 31.

He told Ingham: “(This) affects the way you think as a result of which you do stupid things like call police and cause the commotion you’ve caused on this occasion.”
