THE Yorkshire Building Society Brass Band are British Open Champions again.

The Huddersfield-based band, conducted by Dr David King, took the title for the fourth time in seven years at Birmingham's Symphony Hall.

It was their second major title in four months.

In May, the band were crowned European Champions in Bergen, Norway for a record successive five years in a row.

And that win marked a personal milestone for the band's musical director who became the first conductor to win the title nine times (seven with Yorkshire Building Society and the other two with Black Dyke).

Of the latest win, Dr King said: "This is testimony to the quality of all our players."

One of the adjudicators at Birmingham described their playing as "One of the great contest performances."

The win was achieved from the number 10 draw, just like their last win two years ago and continues a sequence of `odd year' victories.

Second place went to the Whitburn Band from Scotland . Black Dyke were third while Brighouse and Rastrick, finished fifth.
