Our black fox story looks like it may be one that could run and run.

The mystery animal was spotted in a field in Kirkburton and is believed to be a rare black fox.

One of those to read the story and contact us was 84-year-old James Lawson from Almondbury who was a part-time gamekeeper in Farnley Tyas for 40 years.

“During the Second World War there was a man in Thurstonland who had a collection of black foxes,” he said.

“But when he was called up to go to war he let them all go down a badger sett in the Farnley Tyas area and this one could be a descendent.”

Mr Lawson added: “I once shot a vixen in Thurstonland and she had a black cub with her. Black foxes are certainly very rare.”

The fox has been spotted by Stephen Scott, of Highburton, who said: “I saw it last Thursday in the fields close to Highburton First School.

“It was clearly a fox and was very black. I could see it run through the field.”

Gail Stocks, of Kirkburton, said: We have a normal fox around Hallas Lane but the other morning I clearly saw the black fox.”

Kirkburton resident Alex Tindle first saw the fox in fields in the Woodsome Lees area of Kirkburton off Penistone Road and managed to take this photograph.

Black foxes have only been seen by a handful of people in the UK and pictures of them are few and far between.
