It is the height of elegance - and the height of expense.
The property known as The Mansion, in Storthes Hall Road, Kirkburton, boasts eight bedrooms, magnificent grounds, and even a butlers pantry in its library.
And it is now officially the most expensive home to have been sold in Huddersfield last year for a fraction under THREE MILLION POUNDS.
The house stands within the extensive grounds of the former Storthes Hall psychiatric hospital, and is thought to have once been used as a children’s home.
On the ground floor it has a reception hall, drawing room, library with butlers pantry, dining room, morning room, cloakroom, laundry room, study, kitchen, butlers kitchen and boot room, cloakroom, flower room, orangery with keeping cellars, and a side entrance hall.
On the first floor there are five bedroom suites, a reading room, and bathroom, and on the second floor are three further bedrooms, a sitting room, games room and house bathroom.
It has principal and secondary cantilevered stone staircases, a stone flagged floor runs through much of the ground floor from the reception hall to the orangery, and there is a wealth of ornate ceiling plasterwork, cornicing and decorative woodwork in many of the rooms along with finely crafted door and window surrounds.
The original appearance of the building has been revived over a number of years, and it has garages and outbuildings.
In August it sold for £2,975,000, making it by far the most expensive property sold in Kirklees and Calderdale last year.
James England, the owner of England Residential estate agency, who sold the Mansion, said: “I suspect it is one of the highest prices ever paid for a home in the Huddersfield area.
“But I am not surprised because it is such a special property.
“There are very few manageable country estates which become available, and this one is very special.
“It’s a particularly appealing piece of Georgian architecture. It is large and impressive without being overwhelming, and at one time I believe it was a children’s home within the old hospital site.”
Mr England also sold the second most expensive house in Kirklees last year, with Birch House, in Birks Lane, Kirkburton, a five bedroom property in six acres of land, going for £1,500,000 in June.
“That is another really lovely property in quite exceptional grounds.”
