A MAN who illegally stored hundreds of waste tyres has been convicted of the crime for the second time.

Kyriacos Kyrianou, 43, admitted keeping controlled waste, namely tyres, in a yard off Huddersfield Road, Honley, between November 2007 to May 2008.

Kyrianou, of Shelley Lane, Kirkburton, pleaded guilty to the offence at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court.

He will be sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on April 27.

Kyrianou was fined £5,000 plus £1,000 costs earlier in 2007 after admitting illegally storing up to 15,000 spent tyres in the yard off Huddersfield Road, Honley.

Officers from the Environment Agency had carried out a covert surveillance operation and discovered tyres in lorry trailers.

Kyrianou was threatened with three months in jail if he did not pay the £6,000 bill in November 2007.

But when The Examiner visited the site on April 3 it found hundreds of waste tyres and other waste.

Holme Valley North councillor Beryl Smith said: “It was unsightly but it was also a health hazard if it caught fire.

“There was a lot of concern about it but we had to wait for the legal team to deal with it.

“Hopefully Mr Kyrianou will get the message and we will ask residents to be vigilant.

“It’s a real eyesore. We have some lovely areas in Holme Valley and we don’t want eyesores like that. It’s a blight on the whole community.”

Honley resident Barry Fowler, 64, added: “It seems extraordinary that this chap can act with impunity.

“It’s inexplicable and inexcusable.”
