Funding of £25,000 to illuminate Dewsbury Minster was backed by Kirklees Cabinet.

The money will be spent on external lights for the church.

Clr Cathy Scott, Cabinet member for Place and Dewsbury East ward member, said: “It’s a welcome investment for Dewsbury.

“The Minster is an historic building. Unfortunately the previous work didn’t quite work.”

Her Cabinet colleague, Clr Peter McBride, described the Minster as “probably the most important building in Dewsbury” in moving the funding allocation.

Cabinet papers said the lights would go some way to resolving long-standing problems with lighting the church at night.

The Grade II* listed landmark, parts of which date back to the 13th century, had grants for new lights in 2000 but problems were encountered at the start.

As well as tripping out, vehicles were able to drive over the floor lights, damaging them.

Kirklees believes that, due to the importance of Dewsbury Minster as one of three landmark buildings in the town – along with the Town Hall and Pioneer House – investment is needed.

While the council is putting £25,000 towards the cost, the Minster will be responsible for future maintenance costs, upkeep and electricity charges.
