A popular community facility will close after it emerged it would cost £2m to repair it.

Kirklees Cabinet has approved plans to shut the Deighton Centre and relocate its 180 staff into Huddersfield town centre council offices.

And council leader, Clr Mehboob Khan, said all options would be considered for the future use of the 16.8 acre site.

“There will be a high level development appraisal which means that before any future sale all options will be discussed,” Clr Khan said.

“All options are open for consideration which includes housing, business or industrial use – we have got to have something there that will work with the local area.

“Staff will relocate to the town centre and will be a positive step as it will bring more custom for town centre shops and businesses on a regular basis.”

The centre will close next year as part of a council strategy to make savings and efficiencies in its property use.

It’s thought the closure will add to the £4m saved from the council’s accommodation strategy.

The Deighton Centre is a mix of offices, training space and nursery.

A former high school, it was said to be too big and expensive to maintain.

The closure plans would also mean the shutdown of Tiddlywinks Nursery, which is on the site.

The grounds also have sports facilities and include the Deighton sports area, which are unaffected by the closure plans.
