A sports centre is to close as part of new school proposals.

Kirklees Council is to close Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre, Cleckheaton, in late 2016.

It is part of plans for the replacement of Whitcliffe Mount School.

The council’s Labour Cabinet made the decision in a private session of Tuesday’s meeting.

And Clr Kath Pinnock, Lib Dem leader, said the Cabinet now needed to get on and sort a replacement sports centre.

She said: “Cabinet agreed to close it in 2016.

“I don’t blame them – it was a difficult decision to make, but the challenge now is to get on and come up with a replacement sports centre.”

The Cleckheaton ward councillor said she feared the town would lose its sports facilities if there was no replacement.

“This part of Kirklees has 50,000 people and the Cabinet cannot say they don’t count.

“They need to get on with a replacement because otherwise this part of Kirklees won’t have a sports centre and it won’t have a pool.

“I know what the Cabinet has said about a pool, but it won’t last forever.”

The Cabinet decision was made in private but some of the decision has been made public.

It says Cabinet agreed: “That Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre be closed in late 2016, on a date to be agreed by the Education Funding Agency as part of the contract for the demolition of the site and its replacement with a new build school.

“That negotiations take place with trustees to achieve an exchange of land that provides the council with a parcel of land for disposal, and that this land be unfettered with buildings.”

It gives council officers authorisation to continue discussions with the Education Funding Agency and the Trustees and to work on the land swap.

Finally, it gives council officers the green light to “review the availability and sustainability of sports facilities in Spen and the North Kirklees area, and propose options for future provision.”

Whitcliffe Mount Business and Enterprise College is scheduled for a £13.4m new-build school.
