A market place could be in line for a £60,000 boost.

Councillors will consider spending the money on a project to improve the Market Place outside Dewsbury Town Hall.

And it could mean the area is ‘de-cluttered’ of street furniture to create a space for outdoor events.

Clr Cathy Scott, Cabinet member for Place, said: “This area is at the very heart of the town and the original work to improve the area is now 20 years old and in need of updating.

“The Market Place area is overcrowded with street furniture, shelters, bollards, planting and trellising and the proposal is to remodel it to provide an area ideal for events.”

The proposal will see the removal of an ornate shelter, which may be used elsewhere. Planting beds will be paved over while benches will be taken away. The stone sculpture will remain, but could be relocated in the square.

Plans to improve the area have been on the council agenda for some time and consultations has revealed that people want the Market Place and town hall frontage to be at the heart of the town.

Kirklees Council say there is too much street furniture, with council papers saying the “area is viewed as ‘cluttered’ which diminishes the use of the area for evens and general movement.”

The Cabinet report adds: “This refurbishment project is a simplification and re-use of existing features; re-using existing materials, adding some new and taking existing features away to create space.”

Clr Scott, Labour member for Dewsbury East, added: “This work will cost £60,000 and will allow the area to become a distinctive town square and a hub for activities and events for the community.”

Refurbishment works have been estimated at £49,975, lighting disconnections is £2,000, tree removal and stump grinding is £800, £2,550 for the installation for three street trees and grilles. Design fees are estimated to be around £4,000.

The plan is part of major plans for Dewsbury town centre , with proposals for Dewsbury Minster and Pioneer House already backed.

Kirklees Cabinet will consider the Market Place funding tomorrow and if backed, work could begin in March and take four weeks and be complete in time to host the Spirit event on April 12.

However, the start date will be rescheduled if it looks like it will not possible to finish the scheme in time for the major community event.
