YOUTH services face a major overhaul – but it will be delayed until future budgets are confirmed.

Kirklees Council admits its youth support services for those aged eight to 19 need to be changed.

They’re looking at how the voluntary and community sector can help, how the council could work and what they need to do differently.

Kirklees Cabinet last night said that while changes can be approved – they cannot be implemented until the council knows how much money there is to fund youth services.

Clr Cath Harris, Cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: “We propose the Children’s Trust should oversee the development of this approach. We do recognise the wider range of people who work with young people, particularly the voluntary and community sector who are highly valued.”

A review has been under way since October and was originally meant to deliver £161,000 savings this year. Delays mean any financial savings will not be met until 2014/15.

Council papers also say there is a “strong belief” that now is the wrong time to “disinvest” in young people.
