Kirklees and Calderdale pupils struck gold and made their region proud at a top schools’ sporting event.

A total of 25 schools won county honours at the Jet2holidays West Yorkshire School Games 2014, when they went head-to-head with pupils from 75 schools in five events.

Our ample outdoors space helped local teams prosper in cross country events, with 13 school teams earning top three places in their categories.

These included pupils from Scissett Middle, Kirkburton Middle, Wooldale Junior, Ripponden Junior and Infants, Greetland Academy, Netherthong Primary, Bywell Junior School, Old Earth, Wooldale Junior School, Rowley Lane Junior and Infant School, Skelmanthorpe First and Bywell Junior School.

Meanwhile, students from Kirkburton Middle, Newsome, Boothroyd, Ravescliffe, Kirkburton Middle, Old Earth, Crossley Heath, Holmfirth High and Scissett Middle showcased their athletics prowess.

Holmfirth High scored high in basketball, earning gold medal in boys basketball, whilst Brighouse High School, Brooksbank School and Honley High all hit medal positions in badminton.

King James rose high in trampolining, with its key stage four team and student Rhianna Dean gaining first place, whilst its netball team scored second place in netball.

Newsome High School struck second in intermediate disability football, whilst Halifax High came first in the novice category, followed by Kirkburton Middle School in third.

The guest of honour was international long jumper Chris Tomlinson, who opened the vibrant early spring festival event, which also featured cultural displays from schools.

Nigel Harrison, the chief executive of WYSport, said: “We were pleased to welcome sporting champion, Chris Tomlinson to the Jet2holidays West Yorkshire School Games winter festival.

Chris Tomlinson, Sporting Champion and TeamGB athlete said: “Competing in a big event is an amazing experience and although there was a lot of pressure to perform well it is important to enjoy it.

“Win or lose you can always learn something by trying your best.”

Chair of the Local Organising Committee and Tong High School teacher, Steve Curran, said: “I have seen first hand the important role sports can play in school life, enhancing school values and raising standards of pupils achievements.”
