A GROUP of joinery students have created their own guitars – after taking inspiration from one of their tutors.

Paul Philip, joinery tutor at Kirklees College, has been making instruments for over a decade and decided to offer lessons to the students based at the college’s Brunel House at Fieldhouse Lane, off Leeds Road.

Danny Mould, Elliott Hirst, Ashley Varley and Fenton Carberry-Tully stripped down existing guitars and used the skills they’ve learned on their joinery courses to rebuild them to create unique finished instruments.

Elliott, Ashley and Danny, all aged 18, are level 2 joinery students, while 19-year-old Fenton is studying level 3.

Brunel House is the Kirklees College centre for construction students.

Hundreds study a range of courses there including bricklaying, plastering, plumbing and joinery.

Paul said: “I brought a few guitars in that I’d made and I couldn’t believe the interest.

“I thought: ‘I might have something here’ and started running a small course as an enrichment option.

“The students have really enjoyed it. They can’t believe what they’ve made.”

Paul said: “I’m going to run the programme again next year and I’ve already had lots of interest.

“Some of the lads can play a bit already and others have decided to learn. I brought my amp down and we had a little jam. It was fantastic!”
