Employers are adding a little extra to business and beauty courses at Kirklees College.

The college has teamed up with three businesses to offer students even more from September.

Health and beauty spas Eastthorpe Hall in Mirfield and Potting Shed in Batley Carr will deliver beauty classes and offer gifted students the chance to win a place on their elite programme.

And communications experts Talk Direct, an O2 franchise, is re-vamping business at the college’s Dewsbury centre to offer work experience across all areas of the company.

Details of the new initiatives will be available when the college’s Dewsbury centre stages an open day from 10.30am to 1.30pm on Saturday (June 21).

In beauty, which will be delivered at both Dewsbury and Huddersfield centres, students will be given the opportunity to visit the spas to get an idea of the key skills and attributes required of staff in the two very different environments.

Students on NVQ Level 2 Beauty and above will get the chance to enrol on the Excellence programme and chosen “elite” students will attend master classes at Eastthorpe Hall as well as being offered shadowing and placement opportunities at both spas, which could possibly lead to employment.

Stephanie Barraclough, owner and partner at Eastthorpe Hall, said: “We are really excited about working with Kirklees College and allowing students to extend and develop their skills by sharing the expertise we have within our fantastic facilities.”

Lisa Buckley, head of hair and beauty at Kirklees College, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity providing the students with links to an outstanding local employer to help them develop both their professional and employability skills. We are delighted to offer our students the chance to learn in such a high-class environment as this partnership will bring.”

In business, which will be delivered at Dewsbury centre, students will be given the task of solving problems that occur in real companies and will take part in a final project, judged by Talk Direct. There is the potential for students to earn further work experience or even employment with the firm.

Zak Patel, managing director and founder of Talk Direct, said: “We already have a great relationship with Kirklees College and I thought this would be a great way to give something back to my town. “It shows that businesses can help young people to learn as sharing time and expertise can be extremely valuable. Even if only one student does well out of it I think it is worth doing.”

Nikki Davis, head of business at Kirklees College, said: “This is a really exciting new opportunity for students to gain real business experience, learning from the very best in mobile technology and sales.”
