Huddersfield is set to welcome a Royal guest later this week.

The Duke of York is heading to town to officially open Kirklees College’s new Waterfront campus.

And Prince Andrew will also make a visit to the University of Huddersfield, a few hundred yards away, to reward young business entrepreneurs.

The Duke is due to arrive at the college about 10.30am on Thursday, May 8, for an hour-long visit.

The £70m campus opened last September, replacing the former premises in New North Road, Huddersfield.

It is now home to thousands of students studying dozens of different courses.

A college spokesman said: “The Duke will tour the building including the kitchens, the restaurants, the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy and the hair and beauty salons.

“He will then unveil a commemorative plaque in the atrium.

“He will be meeting students, staff, local employers and college alumni during the event”.

At the University’s Queensgate campus, the Duke will present 16 young people, comprising current students and recent graduates, with an award marking the success of their respective start-up businesses.

The ten businesses, created and pioneered by the young entrepreneurs, were chosen to represent each of the ten universities in Yorkshire. Each business will receive The Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Award.

The presentation will take place at the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre at the University of Huddersfield, where His Royal Highness is Patron.

The event marks the second presentation of the awards by His Royal Highness, who is committed to the encouragement of enterprise and entrepreneurship amongst young people across the country.
