A raft of new student businesses could be on the way out of Kirklees College.

And that’s because of the success of two of the college business students.

Business Enterprise students Hannah Mitchell, 17, from Golcar, and Charlotte Anderton, 17, from Elland, have secured a top prize of £5,000 to kickstart a new Enterprise Society at Kirklees College.

The pair travelled to London to pitch for £5,000 which they wanted to use to start up the new Phoenix Enterprise Society, an internal group set up to help fund and start up student businesses.

The pitch took place in central London at the Google Campus building.

The day was led by NACUE (The National Association of College and University Entrepreneurs), a central funding unit which controls the pot of money that Universities and College enterprise societies bid for.

Hannah and Charlotte were among students from universities and colleges from around the country invited to pitch their presentation to three judges on why their Enterprise Society Group should win funding.

David Scott, the college’s head of learning centres, said: “Hannah and Charlotte were invited to pitch for the money in front of a panel of three judges in just four minutes.

“Professionally and confidently they delivered their pitch to the judges, explaining in fine detail how the money would be used to benefit their fellow students at college.”

“They explained who needed a helping hand in getting off the ground their own business idea, how the money would also be used to work together and bring together external enterprise society’s such as the Kirklees Youth Enterprise Society and the Forget Me Not Trust.”

Lydia Butterworth, the college’s team leader for learner success said: “I am so proud of Charlotte and Hannah. They were incredible and this money is going to go a long way to helping fund Kirklees College students in setting up their own businesses and providing events and opportunities for the whole college.”

Kirklees College was one of only eight colleges in the country to receive the top funding prize of £5,000.

Now the funding has been secured, The Phoenix Enterprise Society will be holding its first group meeting in the New Year
